Prince William’s Climate Change Disaster Claims Based on Outdated Science and Naïve Geopolitics

(Calgary, AB)

On April 4, 2021, the Daily Mail and Sky News reported that the Prince William had called for a ‘reset’ in the relationship of humans and nature, saying that one goal of his “Earthshot Prize” is to “fix our climate”, but this ignores the vast influence of natural forces like the Sun and ocean cycles, says Friends of Science Society. Catastrophe claims about climate change are based on unreliable computer climate models as outlined by CLINTEL, a group of more than 900 scientists and scholars who dispute the claim of a climate emergency.

Recent peer-reviewed research by Roger Pielke, Jr., and Justin Ritchie, entitled “Distorting the view of our climate future: The misuse and abuse of climate pathways and scenarios” reveals that outdated science underlies much of climate science and : “Climate science research and assessments under the umbrella of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have misused scenarios for more than a decade.

Pielke, Jr. and Ritchie report that an unrealistic, extremely “hot” climate scenario is the common reference point. This scenario is known as “RCP 8.5”, referring to a set of scenarios known as Representative Concentration Pathways. RCP 8.5, is the most extreme, least likely scenario, but is also the most cited in climate papers.

Van vuuren et al (2011) https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10584-011-0148-z

This catastrophic scenario has been promoted as “Risky Business” by influential “green” billionaires, as reported in Forbes, Jan 2, 2020. In a plain language commentary of Nov. 30, 2020, entitled “The Unstoppable Momentum of Outdated Science“, Pielke, Jr., reported that we reached ‘peak carbon emissions’ in 2019; the planet is not on a catastrophic climate trajectory.

Consequently, Prince William’s stated goal to “fix the climate” is unfounded as is his 10-year deadline.

Several well-known climate scientists and economists published an article in “Nature” in July 2019, entitled “Why Setting a Climate Deadline is Dangerous”. They called for the authors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) SR1.5 report to speak out against the growing flood of “climate emergency” claims, that youth activists like Greta Thunberg and her followers, and many media pundits attributed to the SR1.5 report.

Friends of Science Society’s 2018 rebuttal to the IPCC SR1.5 report, entitled “Faulty Premises = Poor Public Policy on Climate Change” condemned the reliance on RCP 8.5 as if “business-as-usual”, when it is wildly exaggerated.

Despite Prince William calling for businesses and corporations to engage on climate change initiatives, Fiedler et al (2021), published in Nature, explains that, “The rules by which climate science can be used appropriately to inform assessments of how climate change will impact financial risk have not yet been developed.”

Prince William’s dire predictions also reflect a naïve view of climate geopolitics, says Friends of Science Society, referring to a new report by Canadian energy economist Robert Lyman entitled “When Giants Arise: The Real World of GHG Emissions and Growth.

Lyman writes: “According to United Nations data, the global population will grow by more than two billion people between 2018 and 2050, and almost all of this growth will be in Asia and Africa. Europe and North America, which had only 15% of the world’s population in 2018, will see that share shrink to 11% by 2050….”

Lyman notes that the climate-obsessed Western nations seem oblivious to the needs and demands of the rising giants, writing: “Just as China has over the past few decades taken its place as one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the world, a number of other “giants” are waiting in the wings…With its ever-declining shares of global population and income, “the west” will not be able to constrain the aspirations, or the emissions, of the emerging giants.”

Friends of Science Society will host a free live online event April 15, 2021, entitled “A Cruel and Unusual Punishment”, critiquing Canada’s climate plan. Watch for details.

About
Friends of Science Society is an independent group of earth, atmospheric and solar scientists, engineers, and citizens that is entering its 19th year of offering climate science insights. After a thorough review of a broad spectrum of literature on climate change, Friends of Science Society has concluded that the sun is the main driver of climate change, not carbon dioxide (CO2).
