As energy and electricity prices surge — in large part due to Germany’s messy transition to renewable energies — electric car owners are getting the price shock of their lives at e-car charging stations.

Munich e-car owners to getting zapped by charging station price shocks.

This is especially true in the Bavarian city of Munich, where the Stadtwerke München municipal utility announced it will significantly boost the price of electricity by up to a whopping 81 percent, a number of German media outlets have reported.

DC fast charging 69 cents/kwh

“At the AC charging stations, the electricity price will rise from 38 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 49 cents per kWh, while at DC fast charging stations the amount will jump from the current 38 cents per kWh to a whopping 69 cents per kWh,” the Munich online daily Merkur here reports.

“The current rates will remain in effect until the end of March, after which the charging cards of the municipal provider will lose their validity,” the Merkur.de added. “The last increase by Münchner Stadtwerke took place three years earlier, in April 2019.”

“Total madness”

“A price increase of 28% (AC) or 81% (DC) is already brutal. That’s no longer an adjustment, it’s brutal,” described one consumer.

According the online Bild daily here, Bavarian CSU parliamentary group leader and e-car driver Manuel Pretzl expressed his displeasure over the development: “This is total madness. You can’t destroy the cost advantage of e-cars. At home, electricity costs around half!”

Ironically, Manuel Pretzl sits on the supervisory board of the Münchner Stadtwerke municipal utility, Bild reported.
