Miners there were using picks, shovels and bare hands to unearth rocks rich with the metal. Water sometimes rushes into holes and drowns miners.

There are more than 255,000 creuseurs mining cobalt in DRC, at least 35,000 of whom are children.

The lawsuit details that children, some as young as 6 years old, were forced by their families’ extreme poverty to leave school and work in cobalt mines.
