8 Ways in Which COVID Vaccines Are New

Should we trust vaccines that are unprecedented in so many respects?

Last month, a 42-page analysis titled Worse Than the Disease? Reviewing Some Possible Unintended Consequences of the mRNA Vaccines Against COVID-19 was published in a peer-reviewed journal.

This is a dense read, that examines the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Iā€™m personally not equipped to evaluate the scientific arguments therein, but the analysis begins by placing current events in a startling context.

Three years ago, a 2018 report published by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation divided vaccines into three groups: simple, complex, and unprecedented. COVID-19 vaccines belong to the latter group. Based on the Foundationā€™s ā€œreal world experience of trying to develop highly effective vaccines against HIV, TB, and malaria,ā€ the 2018 report tells us unprecedented vaccines typically take 10+ years to develop.

It tells us they have an estimated 5% chance of successfully completing Phase II clinical trials, followed by a 40% chance of success in Phase III trials.

40% of 5% is: 2%.

Ground-breaking vaccines therefore normally take more than a decade to develop, and are unsuccessful 98% of the time.

Yet a mere three years later, the public is being told that multiple COVID vaccines are now ready for prime time. Indeed, the Canadian government is assuring us, via Twitter, that COVID vaccines have ā€œproven to be safeā€ (see below).

Getting back to the 42-page analysis, it contains a text box on page 2 alleging that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are unprecedented in eight specific ways:

  1. First to use PEG (polyethylene glycol) in an injection
  2. First to use mRNA vaccine technology against an infectious agent
  3. First time Moderna has brought any product to market
  4. First to have public health officials telling those receiving the vaccination to expect an adverse reaction (italics in original)
  5. First to be implemented publicly with nothing more than preliminary efficacy data
  6. First vaccine to make no clear claims about reducing infections, transmissibility, or deaths
  7. First coronavirus vaccine ever attempted in humans
  8. First injection of genetically modified polynucleotides in the general population

Thatā€™s quite a list.
