The Sun spits up solar flares all the time. But you know what it doesn’t normally do? Spit up superflares. Events more than a thousand times powerful than regular solar flares.
As far as we know, the Sun has never superflared. According to a study, however, never say never. The Sun is capable of firing off an incredibly powerful superflare that could wreck havoc on Earth’s technology-depended society, the study suggests.
The same basic processes drive the “normal” flares of high-energy radiation emmited by the Sun and superflares blasted out by faraway stars which can be thousands of times more powerful, researchers found. This result supports the hypothesis that the Sun is able to produce a potentially devastating superflare scientists say.
