966 post-vaccine deaths have been reported to the CDC.
The United States began administering ’emergency use’ COVID-19 vaccines to its citizens in mid-December. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have an online database in which people are encouraged to report adverse vaccine reactions.
The database is updated every Friday, but lags by a week. Currently, therefore, it includes reports processed as of February 19th. During these first 10 weeks, the CDC has been advised of 966 post-vaccine deaths.
It is beyond the ability of medical science to determine what role, if any, the vaccine played in many of these circumstances. Two-thirds (635) of the deaths involve people aged 65 and older. Even amongst younger individuals, many had non-trivial health problems.
Nevertheless, post-vaccine deaths are an important part of the COVID story. They are another thread in this tragic tapestry. When someone dies suddenly and unexpectedly after receiving a vaccine that was supposed to save their life, the shock and anguish felt by their loved ones is particularly acute.
Here are some of the deaths of people under age 65 now recorded in the CDC’s database:
A 33-year-old woman in North Carolina received her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on January 28th. She apparently felt fine and went out with friends afterward. She spoke to her father on the phone around 9 pm. The next day, after she failed to show up at work, she was found dead at home.
A Utah woman is described as “a healthy 39 year old mother who got the shots because she worked as a surgical tech.” The day after receiving her second Moderna dose, she reportedly developed nausea and a fever. At the hospital two days later, she was told she needed an emergency liver transplant, and was air lifted to another facility. The vaccine was administered on Monday, February 1st. She died on Friday, February 5th, leaving behind a 9-year-old daughter.
A 56-year-old Florida man employed by a seniors care facility apparently tolerated his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine well. He was reportedly in good health when the second dose was administered at his workplace, felt fine afterward, and resumed his normal duties. Within an hour of the injection, however, he was found unresponsive. He was rushed to hospital, put on life support, and was deemed brain dead two days later.
In Minnesota, a 58-year-old woman also employed at a long term care facility, told a nursing station she felt unwell after receiving her second Moderna dose. They took her vital signs and referred her to the onsite vaccine clinic. There she was given ice for shoulder pain, observed for a while, and then “released back to work.” Around 10 pm that night, she texted a coworker, describing the pain in her entire left side as “off the charts.” After she failed to show up for work the next morning, she was found dead in her home.
After receiving her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, a 58-year-old Virginia woman who suffered from obesity and diabetes, seemed fine 20 minutes later and walked out to her car. A third-party describes what happened next: “I was called to assess the patient in the parking lot for troubles breathing. EMS was called as I made my way outside…patient was leaning out of the car and stating that she could not breath…She then began to vomit about every 20-30 seconds. Epipen was administered in the right leg with no relief…A second epipen was administered in the patients right arm again with no relief…When EMS and clinical staff transferred patient to the stretcher she became unresponsive…Per [Emergency Department] report large amount of fluid was suctioned from the patients lungs…Shortly thereafter no cardiac activity was found and patient pronounced dead.”
A 42-year-old man in Missouri died four days after receiving a Pfizer vaccine. This man had high blood pressure, and a family history of heart disease, but was apparently in good health at the time. Three days after receiving the vaccine he saw a nurse practitioner, complaining of indigestion, chest pressure, and palpitations. His wife spoke to him on the telephone at 3:30 the following afternoon. When she arrived home a few hours later she found him unresponsive. Rushed to hospital in cardiac arrest, he was pronounced dead before 7 pm.
Similarly, the wife of a 46-year-old California man who died six days after receiving his second Pfizer dose, made this report: “The following three days after his second vaccination, he felt fine. The fourth day, on Sunday January 10, my husband felt extremely fatigued…On Wednesday January 13, he woke up and had swollen eyes…He had the day off but had an early meeting. After his meeting, he was still tired so he went back to sleep. I left to get lunch, and drop off our kids, and upon my return, I found him on the walk-in closet floor, face up, having passed away. He felt as cold as ice.”
Shortly after receiving the Moderna vaccine, a 49-year-old Alabama woman apparently felt fine. Later the same day, she began having seizures, went into cardiac arrest, and died.
A 64-year-old South Dakota man with numerous health issues told the vaccine clinic he felt fine after receiving his first Moderna dose. Later that day he fell at home, incurring “traumatic brain injury.” His wife called an ambulance, and life saving measures were performed enroute to the hospital. Nevertheless, he was pronounced dead at 4:20 that afternoon.
A 58-year-old Virginia pharmacist “developed fatigue and shortness of breath” within hours of receiving his second Moderna dose. Two days later, he was admitted to hospital. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was transferred to another facility. His kidneys failed, and he was put on a ventilator. Although medical personnel suspected he had COVID, multiple tests came back negative. He died on February 5th, 10 days after receiving his second dose.
The morning after a 57-year-old Kansas woman received her first Pfizer dose, she developed a fever, vomited, and felt tired. When her mother checked on her later, she was dead.
According to his wife, an obese 62-year-old Ohio man with multiple health issues developed a headache immediately after getting his second Moderna shot. Throughout the afternoon and evening, he became feverish and short of breath. His wife called an ambulance around 1 in the morning. Although he was able to walk to the stretcher, he stopped breathing soon afterward. CPR was administered, but he died at 2:13 am.
A 40-year-old Nevada man described as immunocompromised tested positive for COVID last September. In January, he received his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Five days later he collapsed at work, was rushed to hospital, and pronounced dead.
Amid these hundreds of achingly sad stories, one of the saddest involves a 59-year-old Maryland woman suffering from inoperable pancreatic cancer. Residing in a care facility, her days were pain-filled and numbered.
She received her second dose of the Pfizer vaccine shortly past noon on January 27th. Around 4:30, she complained of abdominal pain and was given morphine.
At 7:30 that evening she “was found on the floor covered in a large amount of [vomit], unresponsive without a pulse.”
