Children and the Insect Apocalypse

What’s Natural?

Guest post by Jim Steele

The American Psychological Association reports young people are suffering from “a chronic fear of environmental doom”. A recent national survey reported “eco-anxiety” is causing 43 percent of our youth to feel hopeless. Psychologists warn such hopelessness leads to suicide, drug addiction and anti-social behavior. Why such eco-anxiety?  Their hopelessness is driven solely by media narratives. Young people lack the scientific knowledge, lack years of observation, and have yet to acquire the critical thinking skills needed to detect any ecosystem collapse. Its headlines like the Guardian’s, “Plummeting insect numbers ‘threaten collapse of nature”, that induce paranoia that “insects are hurtling down the path to extinction, and threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”.

In contrast, most scientists studying insects readily admit science lacks the data to make such apocalyptic claims. Science has only identified about one million of an estimated 6 to 10 million insect species worldwide, and only a small percentage of those named species have enough data to evaluate their biology, behavior, or changes in abundance. Nonetheless “the last 3 years have seen a global outbreak of media headlines predicting a global insect apocalypse” and scientists are concerned that such “confusing and inaccurate science” will negatively affect support for insect conservation”. Many have published critiques exposing “the insect apocalypse myth.”

Worse, apocalyptic myths are damaging our children’s mental health. Competing for readership with supermarket tabloids, the New York Times announced, “The Insect Apocalypse Is Here”. The Guardian fearmongered, “Insect apocalypse’ poses risk to all life on Earth”. And despite her lack of the requisite scientific knowledge, the United Nations invited 16-year old Greta Thunberg to lecture the world that “entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction”.

How do we protect our children from succumbing to bogus  “chicken little science”? We must teach them to be good critical thinkers. My parents always warned, “believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.” The world’s oldest scientific motto advises, “Take no one’s word.” To maintain objectivity, us scientists were advised to entertain “multiple working hypotheses”. Likewise, adults must teach children to question all fearful claims. But due to the politicization of science, many adults refuse to read anything outside their beliefs. Many indiscriminately share catastrophic headlines without any critical analysis. For the sake of our kids’ mental health, many “psychologists warn parents and guardians against being climate change alarmists.”

The apocalyptic NY Times headlines were prompted by a severely flawed German study claiming 75% of flying insects declined in 27 years. That study surveyed insects at 69 different locations, but 37 locations were surveyed only once, and 20 locations were surveyed just twice. Such snapshots of abundance at one location in just one or two years can never determine a meaningful  trend. Never! That’s bad science. Yet the media eagerly elevated a flawed study from just one small region of Germany to suggest a global insect Armageddon.

The media simultaneously highlighted another single study by Dr Lister in a Puerto Rican forest to implicate a “global climate crisis”. Researchers claimed higher local temperatures devastated insect abundance and collapsed frog and bird populations that feed on insects. However the media ignored longer term research in the same forest that refuted the temperature claim. It reported that after a destructive hurricane new and more edible vegetation began regenerating and enabled an abnormally higher abundance of opportunistic forest insects, frogs and birds. Unfortunately, Lister’s first survey happened in the 1970s when insect populations had spiked. His second survey happened in 2015 after the forest had matured and insect abundance dropped to normal pre-hurricane numbers. Lister had misinterpreted half of a natural population fluctuation as a catastrophic decline driven by climate change.

Giving less attention to optimistic studies is not unusual. Where were media headlines that moths more than doubled in Great Britain over the past 50 years? Why no media fanfare for the 2020 peer-reviewed study that found no change in US insect abundance since 1980?  That study evaluated a network of Long-Term Ecological Research sites established by the National Science Foundation. They found at some sites insect abundance and diversity increased or was unchanged, while at other locations there was a slight decrease. The result? No net change.

Although transforming natural habitat into agricultural land greatly benefitted people, it did reduce insect populations. However due to better conservation efforts and efficient farming practices, agricultural lands that once covered 63% of America in 1949 were reduced to 51% by 2007. (Unfortunately, due to biofuel subsidies, agricultural land increased in the Corn Belt.) Additionally, genetically modified plants continue to reduce the indiscriminate spraying of insecticides once practiced in the days of aerial crop dusting.

To trust the science, we must examine all the science. We can then honestly tell our children why there’s great hope for our future.

“Scientists Say”

“Scientists say” that sea level is rising faster than at any time in the last 2,800 years.

Seas are now rising faster than they have in 2,800 years, scientists say – The Washington Post

The 1990 IPCC report said there was no convincing evidence of an acceleration in sea level rise during the 20th century.

Stronger-than-usual explosion.

An explosion on the slopes of Stromboli propelled an avalanche of hot ash and gases down the side of the Italian volcano on Monday (Nov. 16).

The stronger-than-usual explosion was captured on cameras operated by the Istituto Nazionale Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). Imagery shared by Il Mondo dei Terremoti on Twitter shows the eruption in real-time; video captured by infrared cameras that shows the ultra-hot initial eruption and the slightly cooler cloud of ash and gases careening downslope. This avalanche of hot ash and gases is known as pyroclastic flow.

This is the second above-average explosion on Stromboli in the past two weeks. On the evening of Nov. 10, INGV’s cameras captured another large eruption at the volcano.

“Stromboli is the northeastern most of the Aeolian Islands,” says John Search on his website VolcanoLive. “Stromboli volcano has one of the world’s longest recorded periods of activity.”

The Aeolian Islands, in turn,  are located in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. The Aeolian Islands are named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus. The islands’ inhabitants are known as Aeolians. The islands are sometimes referred to as the Lipari Islands or Lipari group after their largest island.

UN seeks urgent climate action to PREVENT “greening” of Sahara Desert

Why? I thought the whole point of  the fight against global warming was to create a greener world.

Six thousand years ago during the Holocene Climatic Optimum the Sahara desert was covered in lakes and vegetation. All this went away when the world cooled. Some of the poorest people in the world, descendants of survivors of the great drying, struggle to survive by scratching a living in the Sahel, the marginal land on the southern edge of the Sahara.

But now, thanks to global warming, the Sahel region of Western Africa will get wetter, according to WMO’s Regional Strategic Office Director, Filipe Lucio.

Wouldn’t you consider this good news?

Imagine the benefits to Africa and Arabia, and other arid equatorial regions, if global warming restored the ancient Monsoons, which failed 6000 years ago after the end of the Holocene Optimum? Northern Africa and Arabia could once again be like the Garden of Eden.

But no. “Overall, Africa needs to take action,” said Lucio. “Action is needed today in terms of adaptation, but also is needed tomorrow in terms of mitigation.”

Lest you be mislead, please understand that the initials ‘WMO’ stand for the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. Can we really believe anything they say?

Here’s the UN report:

Where Are All the Sick People?

Guest Survey by Kip Hansen – 17 November 2020

When I am puzzled by something, I try to find out what’s really going on.  Years ago, I wrote “What Are They Really Counting?”.    The lessons in that essay are even more important today than they were when I penned it at the end of 2015.  Many governments of the world have largely shut down their economies and issued edicts restricting the normal every-day activities of their citizens because of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the illness it causes – Covid-19.   We are bombarded in the media with screaming headlines of “rising cases” like this:

The curious thing is that among all my family, friends, acquaintances and colleagues, I know of only two people who have been sick with/from (or even suspected) Covid-19 during the entire pandemic period.  My wife has one extended family member who was sick, hospitalized for 24 hours out of extreme caution, in Spain.  No one I ask knows anyone who is sick with/from Covid-19.

For those of you with little time or no patience:

[if that does not work, click here to take the survey]

There is one exception, we have a friend with a daughter who is a nurse in a dedicated Covid-ward in a local hospital.  There have been some sick Covid-19 patients there.  Some have even died:

This graph shows the daily Covid-19 deaths for my local county.  There have been 87 deaths in the county with Covid-19 mentioned in any way on the death certificate.  Since June 2020, there have been only 8 deaths from/with Covid.  With a population of about 180,000.  This gives my county an approximate generalized death rate of 48.3/100,000.   Even if Covid-deaths continue at the current rate and rise to 105 by the end of the year – our annual country-wide Covid-death rate would be only 58/100,000.   New York State as a whole has a Covid-death rate of 175/100,000.  The death rate of NY State is over 3.6 times higher than in my county.  For comparison, the annual death rate from cancers, nationally, is about 160/100,000.

Our local NPR station out of Albany, NY, which I will call “WDNC” for obvious reasons, read letters in today’s “Round Table” program from several readers, all of whom claimed that they didn’t know anyone who had been or was presently sick with Covid-19, however, they were sure that the apparent-President-elect would do the right thing by issuing orders for every citizen to “wear a mask”.

Previous to this, I thought it might be a quirk that among my friends and acquaintances, my family, my county that there weren’t any/many sick people.  However, emailing a friend in Portugal revealed that she too didn’t know any sick people, but had heard that there were some in Texas.  During a rather unpleasant visit to my dentist earlier today, neither the dentist or any or his staff knew anyone who had been or was sick with Covid-19.

My father was a doctor, I come from a medical family, I studied Pre-Med originally before switching majors, several times.  I did humanitarian work in a third-world country where the threats of malaria, dengue and yellow fever were real everyday worries.  I know there must be sick people – there are people dying, after all.  A lot of people dying, seemingly, but . . . . Total Deaths in the U.S. are not higher than normal for this time of year, despite Covid 19 according to CDC mortality figures.  (To see Total Deaths, you must download the .csv file from the GREEN LINK near the top of the page.)   The CDC figures for New York State show the same thing – Total Deaths are running even with previous years – despite Covid-19. (Same link – select State instead of the default National.  The .csv file is by week, so compare previous years by week numbers.  Note:  The most current weeks will be incorrect – too low — not fully reported yet – back at least three weeks.)

So, just to try to get a handle on the actuality of the Covid-19 pandemic, as experienced in the real world by readers here,  I have created this little three-question survey – I will publish the results here once there are enough participants or in a week, which comes first.

[if that does not work, click here to take the survey]

The survey is only three questions, with dropdowns for your numerical answers.  Very quick and easy.  If you wish to contribute personal or local information, or anecdotes, use the comment section.

Author’s Comment:

Covid-19 is not a hoax.  It is not a fantasy.  It is not simply made up.

However, the responses of our governments, in the United States, and in many other countries around the world have been far more harmful that the pandemic itself.  History will replete with books recounting the horrors caused by the worldwide Covid Pandemic Panic

One of the first to hit the stands is:  “The Price of Panic : How the Tyranny of Experts Turned a Pandemic Into a Catastrophe” by Jay W. Richards, William M. Briggs and Douglas Axe.  Available in hardback, e-book editions and in audible formats.  I recommend it.

Rudy Guliani, we have more than enough illegal ballots to overturn the results

Several people have sent me these videos – they are that interesting,  but then I wonder if everyone has seen them already. Then I remember what the Legacy Media is like, so I figure I should share. In other news, Georgia’s recount is a whitewash because no one is allowed to check signatures. Wisconsin wants to charge $7 million to recount the votes.

Rudy Guliani: ” we have more than enough illegal ballots to overturn the results”

Rudy Giuliani With Maria Bartiromo

Sidney Powell With Maria Bartiromo: “Evidence is coming in through a fire hose…”

Retired Admiral Peter Neffenger is on the board of Smartmatic and on Joe Bidens presumptuous President Elect transition team.

According to Sidney Powell “Millions of Americans have written in” to tell them about election fraud. Boiled down, the software was the problem, it’s also used on other brand’s voting machines.

Every state that bought Dominion should have a serious criminal investigation. There may have been kickbacks. Substantial sums of money may have been given to family members.

I can’t tell you how livid I am to our government  not paying attention to the warnings about this…

Dominion was that bad:

…”hundreds of thousands of votes at a ratio of 67% for  Biden and 23%  for Trump were loaded into the system and multiple times.”

Strange voting patters….

I can’t tell you how livid I am to our government not paying attention to the warnings […]

How Socialists Use Climate Change to Expand Their Power

By Heartland Institute -November 17, 2020

The so-called “existential threat” of human-caused climate change is frequently used by the left to promote socialism. In this episode of “Stopping Socialism TV,” Justin Haskins and Donald Kendal will reveal the truth about climate change and the motives of those who constantly use it as a primary justification for expanding the power of government.

African Lives Matter Too

New study shows how American clean coal technology can increase access to electricity and cut deaths from indoor air pollution

Arlington, VA. The CO2 Coalition of 60 climate scientists and energy engineers today released a White Paper showing how American “high efficiency – low emissions” power plants can save lives in Africa. Only a third of Africans have access to electricity, and the World Health Organization estimates that 439,000 Africans die every year because they have to cook in their homes with wood and dried animal dung. According to a top researcher for the WHO, “having an open fire in your kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour.”

New-tech American Coal-fired Electricity for Africa: Clean Air, Indoors and Out reports on a field visit and interviews at the “Ultra Super-Critical” John Turk coal-fired power plant that serves Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. The plant eliminates virtually all pollutants from its emissions.

The White Paper reviews ten challenges that the operation of such a plant would face in the African economic and political context, and calls on the U.S. government to support proposals by African governments to import the American technology. Under Obama-era policies that are based on computer models that project a future “climate crisis” from emissions of a non-polluting plant food, carbon dioxide, U.S. foreign aid agencies currently oppose coal-fired electrical generation in Africa.

As the White Paper shows, international energy agencies agree that Africa will continue to use its abundant, inexpensive coal for electricity for decades to come. Unless this American technology is exported, China will build the scores of new power plants without pollution controls.

In a bid to appease powerful policy makers and radical activists, Facebook enlisted a company called Climate Feedback to “fact-check” the content shared on its platform. But this move, as I assume was the plan all-along, has quashed scientific debate, and will cause us all to suffer in the long run.

While there has been much said about this year’s California Wildfires, one side of the debate is routinely censored while the other achieves blind promotion. Climate Feedback (CF) label themselves “independent fact-checkers”, and Facebook has given this small group of activists the power to censor any message/page/organisation it feels could knock the man-made global warming theory off track.

This is a dangerous game, and a messy one, too. Who says the scientists over at Climate Feedback have a better understanding of forests and wildfires than, say, experienced forest ecologist Dr Patrick Moore, who says: “Fuel load is far more important than a couple of degrees of temperature. The West has always had droughts, some for 200 years.” Well-researched and logical utterances such as this now sees Dr. Moore run the risk of being censored and de-platformed. And I’m not being dramatic here. People have been shutdown for a lot less. Let’s take American television personality John Stossel as an example.

In Sept, 2020 Stossel had a video “throttled” by Facebook for merely including the views of activist Michael Shellenberger. Stossel wrote of the censorship: “They don’t want people hearing environmentalist @ShellenbergerMD explain that bad gov’t policies are a bigger cause of wildfires than climate change.”

Shellenberger was a catastrophic global warmer for almost two decades of his life. He finally saw the error of his ways this year, writing in a 1,700-word opinion piece for the Australian newspaper: “On behalf of environmentalists everywhere, I would like to formally apologise for the climate scare we created over the past 30 years.” (The op-ed was first published three days earlier in Forbes, but was removed by the outlet “because it violated our editorial guidelines around self-promotion”).

Shellenberger wrote that climate change was not making natural disasters worse, and he backed this up with facts: he pointed out that wildfires had declined around the world since 2003, and the more dangerous fires being experienced in Australia and California were because of the build up of wood fuel and more houses near forests, not climate change

Shellenberger’s stance is, again, a logical one, supported by many, many scientists around the world. However, the powers-that-be and their radical climate activist stooges have been far from impressed with Shellenberger’s switching of sides, and they continue to silence his message at every opportunity.

One tact is to target his interviews, much to the chagrin of folks like Stossel: “A Facebook “fact checker” got Facebook to throttle my video!”, wrote the journalist who has 1+ million followers of FB: “Sadly, Facebook lets ACTIVISTS stifle debate.”

A warning from Facebook carries weight, and following Stossel’s interview with Shellenberger ALL of his content is now “being seen by fewer people, because it was rated Missing Context by a independent fact-checker.”

Facebook’s main beef was with a video in which Stossel was discussing the California Wildfires. The claim from Climate Feedback is that Stossel said “Forest Fires are caused by poor Forest Management. Not from Climate Change” — a perfectly reasonable claim, but one that Stossel didn’t even make! What Stossel actually said was “Climate Change has made things worse” — that’s right, Stossel is open to the idea of man-made global warming, he even said he “feels for Mark Zuckerberg,” but yet the radicals are trying to shut him down anyway. Why? Because in the same video Stossel, like any good reporter, opened up a debate. To do this he called upon the views of Michael Shellenberger, who argued: “A small change in temperature is not the difference between normalcy and catastrophe.” Now that’s hardly an inflammatory opinion, but according to Stossel: “Climate Feedback don’t want people to hear that.”

Facebook say there is an appeals process, but it turns out your complaint arrives at the desk of the exact same people that dealt-out the censoring in the first place. Stossel said he tried to contact Climate Feedback’s editor, but got no response. He did, however, have better luck with two of the scientists that supposedly labeled his video “Misleading”. I say “supposedly” because what Stossel discovered is that these two scientists hadn’t even watched his video. In an interview with Stossel, the pair said the probable reason the content was flagged was because Michael Shellenberger “pops up.”

Climate Feedback don’t like Shellenberger.

They don’t like his book either, which criticizes climate alarmism.

And they resoundingly reject his articulate and logical fact-led positions.

The two Climate Feedback scientists then actually went further, saying that on review of Stossel’s video it is clear that the claims made by CF were baseless, and that both sides of the story were indeed offered. However, and here’s the kicker, both scientists have since retracted those statements, and now fully support Climate Feedback’s original stance.

Furthermore, Stossel’s formal appeal has been rejected because his “claims do not accurately reflect the scientific evidence”. Frustratingly, there is no mechanism in place to fact-check the fact-checkers, logic has no appeals process: “It’s enraging that Facebook gives these activists the power to silence one side of the debate,” lamented Stossel, whose video remains censored.

Stossel’s “mistake” was in failing to blindly promote the message of feardivision, and catastrophe laid-out by the elites and implemented by their radical activist stooges.

We now exist in a world where dissenting scientific views and theories can easily and instantly be quashed. This is a depressing fact. Most worryingly though are the limitations this anti-scientific approach puts on progress. Our modern civilization is being strangled, coerced into a very narrow pen where speech and ideas must align exactly with a very specific narrative. Instead of building a better world, this will fashion insurmountable hardships and restrictions, it will create such division, infighting, and strife that the masses will soon be begging their masters for The Great Reset.

I believe we’re in too deep for this to be stopped.

My advice, as always, is to prepare accordingly: Hunt out and learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own — being entirely self-reliant is key.

Good luck.
