Heavy unseasonable SNOW has disrupted life across the northern Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, with many roads, schools, and businesses forced to close.
In the district of Lahaul-Spiti distric, the administrative centre of Keylong received over 20cm (7.9 inches) of snow, while the Baralacha La pass –located along the Manali-Leh highway– has seen totals exceed 45cm (17.7 inches) over the past 24 hours alone, according to tribuneindia.com.
The Rohtang Pass also received early season snow, which actually brought cheers among local farmers. Here, snow is considered “white manure” as it provides moisture and regulates temperature for better crop production.
The fresh powder at Rohtang, and its surrounding areas, has also delighted the local hoteliers, who are now expecting good business in the coming days as tourists flock to Sissu and Keylong to enjoy the snow--provided the roads reopen. On that point, the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul Spiti said as soon as the weather becomes suitable, the Border Roads Organisation would begin snow-clearing operations.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statement warning that the impacts of the new La Niña (cooling) setup will increase the threat of “cold days” and “severe cold days” through November and December.
Director General of the IMD, Mrityunjay Mohapatra, explains that “La Niña is favorable for cold wave conditions.” He believes the well-below average temperatures experienced across India since the end of September –particularly in northern parts of Maharashtra such as Pune and Nashik, as well as in the nation’s capital Delhi (article linked below)– were likely caused by this switch to La Niña.
Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.
Prepare accordingly— learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.
