Despite the proven -yet ignored- Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, India’s massive metropolitan area of Delhi still managed to suffer its coldest month of October in 58 years.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s mean minimum temperature in October, 2020 was 17.2C — this is the lowest on record since October, 1962’s average of 16.9C. Normally, Delhi records a mean minimum temperature of 19.1C in October, reports indiatoday.in.
The unusual chill has persisted into November, too.
On Monday, Nov 2, India’ capital territory registered a “new record low” of 10.8C–the coldest of the season so far. As noted by the IMD, Delhi’s average low during the first week of November is more like 16C.
This unseasonable chill hasn’t just been confined to Delhi, either. Of late, temperatures well-below average have been suffered across norther
Mahesh Palawat, a climate expert at Skymet Weather, said the absence of strong western disturbances -which cause humid winds to blow- is one reason behind northern India’s unseasonable chill. Dry and cool northwesterly winds have been prevailing, said Palawat, who predicts that minimum temperature will dip even further by the weekend, to levels below 10C.
As reported last week (linked below), Delhi recorded a low of 12.5C (54.5F) on Thursday, Oct 29 — the city’s lowest October temperature for 26 years, since the 12.3C on Oct 31, 1994 (solar minimum of cycle 22).
Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.
Prepare accordingly— learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.
