EU Parliament Votes For Economic Suicide

By Paul Homewood

The absurd buffoons in the tin pot EU Parliament have just voted to bang another nail into the coffin of the increasingly irrelevant European Union:

The European Parliament voted on Tuesday (6 October) to update the EU’s climate target for 2030, backing a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade, up from 40% currently.

Lawmakers in the EU assembly voted the proposed amendment on the 2030 target by 352 votes to 326, with 18 abstentions.

The text will now be forwarded to the EU Council of Ministers representing the EU’s 27 member states for final approval. The EU’s objective is to wrap up negotiations by the end of the year.

The Parliament’s decision on the 2030 climate target took place on Tuesday evening as part of a wider vote on a proposed European Climate Law, which seeks to enshrine into hard legislation the EU’s goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

“We did it! 60% did win!” said Jytte Guteland, a Swedish MEP from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, who was the Parliament rapporteur on the proposed European Climate Law.

It is hardly a source of encouragement that even the MEPs voting against the motion wanted a cut of 55% instead.

The decision will now be put to the Council of Ministers in December, when the usual arm twisting and fudging will take place.

Most MEPs are failed national politicians and placemen, a bunch of self important nobodies.. And this decision highlights just how remote and detached they have become from the voters they are supposed to represent.

In 2018, GHG emissions in the EU were 25% below 1990 levels:

However, a large chunk of this fall took place in the 1990s, mainly as a consequence of the closure of ex Soviet industries in the east. There was another sharp fall of 548 MtCO2e during the financial crisis between 2005 and 2009. These two factors account for an 18% cut from 1990 levels.

During the last decade, emissions have only fallen by 468 MtCO2e, or 8% from 1990 levels. To hit the 60% target, emissions would need to fall by a further 1971 MtCO2e, which would mean a cut of 53% from current levels. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that nobody in the EU Parliament has the first clue how this could be done in just a decade!

The proposals will effectively put the EU into line with the UK, where the Committee on Climate Change has set the Fifth Carbon Budget requiring a cut of 57% from 1990 levels for 2028-2032. However we have already cut by 42% from 1990, much more than the EU has achieved so far, making set of cuts a little bit easier.

The EU is increasingly becoming irrelevant in global terms, producing only 8.6% of world emissions. And an indication of the EU’s relative economic decline is given by the large fall in primary energy consumption in the last decade, in stark contrast to the US where it has held up:

Policies like this will ensure that the EU continues its decay into mediocrity. That’s if it is even still here by then.

Don`t worry there is no significant man- made global warming. The global warming scare is not driven by science but driven by politics. Al Gore and the UN are dead wrong on climate fears. The IPCC process is a perversion of science.
