Deep M6.2 earthquake hits Pagan region, Northern Mariana Islands

A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit the Pagan region, Northern Mariana Islands at 21:08 UTC on June 13, 2020 (07:08 LT, June 14). The agency is reporting a depth of 614 km (381 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 590 km (366  miles). 

This is the second M6+ earthquake in the world since 15:51 UTC today when M6.6 struck Japan’s Ryukyu Islands region.

The epicenter was located 416 km (258 miles) N of Saipan and 440 km (273 miles) N of San Jose Village, Northern Mariana Islands.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are informal (metal, timber, GI etc.) and unknown/miscellaneous types construction.
